FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started in IT support begins with the technology already in your home and the people already in your life. The job takes equal parts curiosity about how devices work and patience in helping the people who use them, and you can practice both right away. Every IT support specialist started as someone willing to try to fix it.

Explore the Basics

Learn the four questions every tech helper asks first: Is it plugged in or charged? Is it turned on? Have you restarted it? Is it connected to the Wi-Fi? Write them on a card and keep it near the family computer. With a parent, use the card the next time a device at home stops working, checking each question in order before doing anything else. You will be surprised how often one of those four is the answer, and starting with the simplest causes is exactly how professionals work.

Try It Out

Be your family's tech helper for one week and keep a "ticket log." Every time someone has a problem with a phone, tablet, computer, TV, or game console, write down what the problem was, what you tried, and what finally worked, with a parent helping on anything that needs a password or a setting change. At the end of the week, read your log and see which problems came up more than once. Keeping records like this is how IT teams turn one fix into a solution everyone can use.

Join the Community

Offer to teach a grandparent, older relative, or neighbor one thing on their phone or tablet, such as making a video call, taking and sending a photo, or making the text bigger. Go slowly, let them do each step themselves, and be patient if it takes a few tries. Many public libraries also host free tech help sessions where volunteers help people with their devices; ask whether you can watch or help.
