Food Stylist

Did You Know?

A roasted turkey shrinks and wrinkles as it cooks, so for photos stylists often roast the bird for only 20 or 30 minutes and then paint the skin with browning sauce to get that golden color. It looks perfect, but it is still raw inside.

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Food styling is a career you can start practicing in your own kitchen, using nothing more than a plate, a phone camera, and a willingness to make the same dish look better on the third try than the first. Start by paying attention to how food actually looks, not just how it tastes.

Explore the Basics

Look through a cookbook, magazine, or food package with a family member and pick out three photos of food that look especially appealing. Talk about what makes each one look good, like the colors, the lighting, or how the food is arranged. Try to guess what trick or technique might have been used to make each photo look so appetizing.

Try It Out

Arrange a simple snack, like fruit slices or crackers, on a plate in a few different ways, then ask a family member to help you take a photo of your favorite arrangement. Notice how small changes, like spacing things out or stacking them differently, change the way the plate looks overall. Ask a family member to pick their favorite version and explain what they liked about it.

Join the Community

Visit a local bakery, farmers market, or grocery store with a family member and notice how the food is displayed to look appealing. Point out a few specific things you notice, like how items are stacked, spaced, or lit. Ask an employee if they are willing to share why they arrange the food that way, if the opportunity comes up.
