Did You Know?

Adults learn very differently from children, and corporate trainers are specialists in adult learning theory, a field called andragogy, which focuses on helping people who already have real-world experience connect new information to what they already know.

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started on the path to becoming a corporate trainer begins with paying attention to how you explain things, noticing what makes information easy to understand versus hard to follow, and building the communication and organizational skills that the career draws on every day. The path into corporate training is more varied than most education careers, and people arrive from many different starting points. Every corporate trainer started by caring about whether the person across from them actually understood what they were trying to say.

Explore the Basics

The next time someone teaches you something new, whether it is a game, a skill, or how to do something around the house, pay attention to how they explain it and what makes it easy or hard to understand. Tell a parent or caregiver one thing the person did well and one thing that confused you. Noticing what works and what does not in an explanation is one of the most important habits a future corporate trainer can develop.

Try It Out

Pick a book, movie, or game you love and create a simple guide that would help someone who has never experienced it before understand what makes it great, including what they need to know going in and what to pay attention to while they are experiencing it. Share it with a family member who is not familiar with it and see if your guide actually helped. Creating something that prepares another person for an experience is a simplified version of what corporate trainers do every time they build a new program.

Join the Community

Look for a free workshop, class, or demonstration at your local library or community center, attend it with a parent or caregiver, and pay attention not just to what is being taught but to how the instructor runs the session. Talk about what you noticed afterward, including what kept your attention and what did not. Experiencing well-run and not-so-well-run instruction as a learner is one of the earliest ways to start developing instincts for what good training actually looks like.

The Adult Learner

Why We Picked It

Now in its tenth edition, this is the definitive text on andragogy, equipping aspiring trainers and learning professionals with the foundational principles of adult learning that have shaped corporate education and human resource development since Malcolm Knowles transformed the field in the 1970s.

Career Connection

Corporate trainers design and deliver learning experiences for adult professionals, and understanding andragogy — the principle that adults learn best through self-direction, real experience, and problem-centered challenges — is the foundational framework that separates trainers who drive genuine results from those who simply deliver content.
