FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started in medical laboratory science begins with building a deep curiosity about how the human body works and how science can reveal what the naked eye cannot see. The laboratory professionals who go furthest in this field are the ones who combined a love of biology and chemistry with a precision-oriented mindset long before they ever set foot in a clinical lab. Every medical laboratory scientist started by asking questions about the invisible world inside living things.

Explore the Basics

Use a magnifying glass or a basic beginner's microscope to look closely at everyday objects, like a leaf, a strand of hair, or a drop of water from a puddle, and notice what is visible up close that you could not see with your naked eye. Write down three things that surprised you about what you saw. Learning to observe carefully at a microscopic level is one of the most fundamental skills a laboratory scientist develops.

Try It Out

Use food coloring and water to mix different colored liquids together in clear cups, practicing pipetting small precise amounts using a kitchen measuring spoon or a dropper, and trying to create consistent results every time. Think about what would happen if you used even slightly too much or too little of each color. Precision in measuring and transferring liquids is one of the most basic and important skills in any laboratory setting.

Join the Community

Ask a parent or guardian to take you to a local science museum or natural history museum and spend extra time in any exhibits about the human body, biology, or medicine, reading the displays carefully and asking questions about anything that surprises you. Museums are designed to make science accessible and exciting, and visiting one with a focused curiosity about the human body is one of the best early steps toward a career in laboratory science.
