FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started as a future copywriter begins with noticing the words around you, from cereal boxes to street signs, and wondering why someone chose them. Early steps include playing with words, trying many versions, and reading your writing aloud. Every copywriter started by writing something and then improving it.

Explore the Basics

Read a few rhymes or jingles aloud, like a song from a commercial or a poem, and clap the beat. Count how many words each line has and notice which ones rhyme. Many catchy slogans use rhythm and rhyme, which is part of why they get stuck in your head.

Try It Out

Write one sentence about your favorite game or book, then rewrite it with fewer words, then fewer again, until only five words are left. Read all the versions out loud and pick the one that sounds best. Copywriters shorten their writing like this because the space on a sign, box, or screen is small.

Join the Community

Ask your teacher or librarian if you can write a short note about a book you love to tape to the shelf or class library. Keep it to three sentences and end with a question that makes someone want to pick it up. Come back in a week to see if anyone borrowed it.
