Did You Know?
Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, lost his job during the Great Depression and began making wooden toys in his small workshop. In 1934, he named his company LEGO, from the Danish words “Leg godt,” meaning “play well.” Today, LEGO is one of the world’s largest toy companies, and more than 600 billion LEGO bricks have been manufactured. It all started with a carpenter and a block of wood.

What Carpenters Really Do
Have you ever looked around your house and noticed the walls, door frames, stairs, or kitchen cabinets? A carpenter is the person who builds all of those things. Carpenters are builders who work with wood and other materials to create the structures we live in, learn in, and play in every day. They measure and cut, hammer and join, turning stacks of lumber into homes, schools, playgrounds, and bridges. They use tools like hammers, saws, levels, and tape measures, and they need to be great at solving puzzles because every building project is like fitting together a giant three-dimensional jigsaw.
Imagine being the person who walks onto an empty piece of land and builds something that people will use for decades. Some carpenters frame the walls and roofs of new houses. Others specialize in beautiful finishing work, such as custom staircases, crown molding installation, or handmade cabinets. Some even build the sets for movies and theater productions. If you love building things with your hands, seeing your projects take shape before your eyes, and creating things that last, carpentry might be the perfect career for you.

Skills That Follow You Everywhere
Being a carpenter helps you develop important skills that are useful in many different careers, like problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. Carpenters learn how to read complex blueprints, make precise calculations under pressure, and coordinate with multiple tradespeople to bring a project together on time and within budget.
Critical Thinking
A carpenter uses critical thinking by reading and interpreting blueprints, calculating material quantities and dimensions, evaluating building code requirements, and making judgment calls about the safest and most efficient construction methods for a building’s unique design and conditions.
Teamwork
A carpenter uses teamwork by coordinating closely with electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, general contractors, and building inspectors on construction projects. They communicate about shared timelines, adjust their work when other trades’ installations affect their plans, and ensure that every component of the building comes together properly.
Problem-Solving
A carpenter uses problem-solving every time a blueprint meets the reality of a job site. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, floors are not always level, and unexpected obstacles like hidden pipes or wiring require immediate creative solutions. Carpenters assess what they find, adapt their plans, and figure out how to achieve the intended result with the conditions in front of them.
