Paralegal

Did You Know?

For centuries, English courts used a special legal version of French, and English was not required in court until a law passed in 1731. That is why the U.S. Supreme Court still opens each session with the Marshal calling out “Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!” That old French word means “hear ye.”

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Starting as a paralegal begins with building strong research, writing, and organizational skills long before anyone sets foot in a law office. Reading closely, asking good questions, and practicing clear explanations are early steps on the path. From there, a paralegal certificate or associate degree program provides a clear, direct route into the field, often in about two years.

Explore the Basics

Start by learning what rules and laws are for, and why they matter for keeping people safe and treated fairly. Practice being a detective by reading a short mystery story and writing down clues in the order you find them. Talk with a parent or teacher about a rule at school or at home, and practice explaining both sides of a disagreement fairly.

Try It Out

Set up a pretend “case folder” for a favorite book or movie, and organize the story's events, characters, and evidence into neat sections. Practice writing a short summary of what happened in a book you read, including only the most important facts. Play a mystery-solving board game or app that involves gathering clues and putting them in order.

Join the Community

Ask a parent or teacher if your class can visit a local courthouse or library for a tour, since many courts welcome student visitors. Look for a mock trial or debate club at school, even at the elementary level, to practice organizing facts and speaking clearly. Visit the library to check out age-appropriate books about the justice system and how laws are made.
