EMT/Paramedic

Did You Know?

Before modern ambulance services existed in the United States, sick and injured people were often transported to hospitals in police wagons or funeral home hearses, because those were the only vehicles designed to carry someone lying down.

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started on the path to becoming an EMT or paramedic begins with understanding how the human body works and what happens when something goes wrong. Learning basic first aid, staying physically active, and exploring real stories from the field are all early steps. The path from curious student to certified EMT is shorter than most people realize, and every skill you build along the way counts.

Explore the Basics

Pick up a copy of The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body by Joanna Cole and read it with a parent or caregiver, paying close attention to how the heart, lungs, and blood work together to keep the body going. After you finish, talk about what would happen if one of those systems suddenly stopped working and what a first responder might do to help. Understanding how a healthy body works is the first step toward helping when something goes wrong.

Try It Out

Choose one emergency scenario, such as a bad fall, a bee sting allergy, or someone choking, and work with a parent to identify the warning signs and the first steps to help. Write or draw a simple "what to do" guide for that emergency as if you were explaining it to a friend. Walking through a scenario step by step before you are ever in one is exactly how EMTs and paramedics train their brains to stay calm under pressure.

Join the Community

Ask a parent or caregiver to take you to visit your local fire station, where many EMTs and paramedics are based, and see if you can look inside an ambulance and meet the crew. Come prepared with two or three questions about what a typical call looks like and what the team does between calls. Seeing the tools and meeting the people who use them makes the career feel real and reachable in a way that reading about it cannot.
