Yuyi Morales

Who She Is

Yuyi Morales is a Mexican-American author, illustrator, and artist whose vibrant, mixed-media artwork celebrates cultural identity, imagination, and the immigrant experience. Born in 1968 in Xalapa, Mexico, Morales moved to the United States in her mid-twenties, speaking very little English. She taught herself the language at the San Francisco Public Library, an experience that became the inspiration for her award-winning picture book Dreamers. Morales has won multiple Pura Belpre Awards for her contributions to Latino children's literature and received a Caldecott Honor for Viva Frida, a visually stunning book created using puppets, dioramas, and digital photography. Her artwork blends traditional techniques with digital media, drawing on Mexican folk art, mythology, and her own personal history. She has become one of the most influential voices in contemporary children's book illustration.

Why She Matters

Yuyi Morales shows young people that your story, your culture, and the challenges you overcome can become the foundation of a powerful creative career. She arrived in a new country without fluency in the language and transformed that experience into award-winning art that connects with children and families across backgrounds. Her work proves that illustration is not just about technical skill; it is about having something meaningful to say and finding a visual way to say it. For aspiring illustrators, Morales is a reminder that a unique perspective and a willingness to experiment with materials and methods can produce work that no one else could have created.
