Eric Carle

Who He Is

Eric Carle was an author and illustrator whose bold, colorful collage artwork shaped how generations of children experience picture books. Born in 1929 in Syracuse, New York, Carle grew up in Germany and studied fine art at the prestigious Akademie der bildenden Kunste in Stuttgart before returning to the United States. He worked as a graphic designer and art director before publishing his first illustrated children's book in 1967. His breakthrough came in 1969 with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has been translated into more than 70 languages and has sold over 55 million copies worldwide. Carle created more than 70 books over the course of his career using his signature technique of hand-painted tissue paper cut and layered into vibrant collage illustrations. He cofounded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts, the first full-scale museum in the United States dedicated to picture book art.

Why He Matters

Eric Carle showed the world that illustration for young children is a serious and powerful art form. His collage technique proved that picture book art does not have to look like traditional drawing or painting. It can be textured, layered, and full of surprising color combinations that captivate children and adults alike. His books weave learning into storytelling, teaching concepts like counting, days of the week, and life cycles through images that children want to return to again and again. For young people interested in illustration, Carle's career is proof that a distinctive artistic voice and a willingness to experiment with unconventional materials can create work that connects with millions of people across cultures and generations.
