Did You Know?
A detective's case file for a complex investigation can run to thousands of pages, including interview transcripts, surveillance footage logs, financial records, phone data, and forensic reports, all organized well enough to hold up in court years later.

How to Get Started
Getting started in detective work begins with sharpening the skills that every investigator depends on: careful observation, precise questioning, and the ability to hold a complicated picture in your head without jumping to conclusions. Building habits of noticing details, listening more than you speak, and asking why before you ask who are the earliest and most important steps. Every detective started by being someone who could not leave a question unanswered.
Explore the Basics
Spend a day paying attention to your surroundings the way a detective would. Notice what is out of place, what people seem to be feeling, and what small details you might normally walk past without seeing. At the end of the day, write down five things you observed that you would not normally have noticed. Detectives train themselves to see the world at a level of detail most people never develop, and it starts with simply deciding to pay attention.
Try It Out
Play a memory observation game with a family member by having them arrange ten objects on a table, giving you sixty seconds to study them, and then covering the tray while you write down everything you can remember, including what each object looked like and exactly where it was placed. Try the challenge several times over a week and track whether your recall improves with practice. Detectives must be able to observe and mentally record a large amount of detail very quickly, and training that skill is something you can practice anywhere.
Join the Community
Ask a parent or caregiver to help you find a mystery-focused book club, library program, or puzzle club in your community where you can practice logical reasoning and problem-solving with other kids. Many libraries run mystery reading programs or detective-themed events that build the same observation and deduction skills that investigators develop over years of professional practice.
