Did You Know?

Spotify Wrapped, the annual feature that shows users their most-listened-to music of the year, was not built primarily as a product feature. It was designed by marketing managers as a shareable social moment, and it has become one of the most successful organic marketing campaigns in the history of streaming.

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started in marketing begins with paying attention to the world around you in a way most people don't. Every ad you scroll past, every logo you recognize, and every time a brand makes you feel something is a lesson waiting to be unpacked. The students who go furthest in this field are usually the ones who cannot help but notice how the world is trying to communicate with them and ask whether it is working.

Explore the Basics

Pick your favorite brand, whether it is a snack, a game, a clothing company, or a sports team, and spend fifteen minutes looking at everything about it: the colors, the logo, the words they use, and how it makes you feel. Write down three reasons you think you like it and whether you think those reasons are about the product itself or about how the brand made you feel. Learning to separate what a product does from how it makes people feel is one of the first things marketing managers figure out.

Try It Out

Design a pretend advertisement for something you love, like a book, a food, or a hobby, by drawing a picture of it and writing a short slogan that captures why someone else should try it. Show it to a family member and ask if the slogan made them want to try the thing you were advertising. This is a simplified version of what marketing teams do every time they launch something new.

Join the Community

Find a school club, sports team, or community group you are already part of and volunteer to help promote it, whether by making a poster, coming up with a slogan, or thinking of a creative way to get more people interested in joining. Doing real promotional work for something you already care about is one of the most natural ways to discover whether marketing is something you love.
