e-NABLE

What It Is

In 2012, a carpenter named Ivan Owen posted a video of a mechanical hand he had built as a prop, and a man in South Africa named Richard Van As, who had lost fingers in a woodworking accident, reached out to ask whether the design could be made into a functional prosthetic. The two men collaborated remotely, built a working mechanical hand, and posted the design files online for anyone to use freely. A special education teacher named Jon Schull saw the files and founded e-NABLE, a global volunteer network connecting people with 3D printers to children who need prosthetic hands and arms, producing devices for between $20 and $50, compared to traditional prosthetics costing tens of thousands. The network has since grown to include thousands of volunteers in more than 100 countries and has provided devices to tens of thousands of children worldwide.

Why It Matters

e-NABLE demonstrated that a distributed network of volunteers with consumer-grade printers could collectively solve a medical problem that the traditional healthcare system had never fully addressed. The organization showed that 3D printing technology is not just a manufacturing tool but also a humanitarian one, and that the skills of a technician operating a printer at home or in school can directly improve the life of a child on the other side of the world. For students considering this field, e-NABLE is a vivid reminder that the work of a 3D printing technician is never just about the object being made. It is about what that object makes possible for the person who receives it.
