Art in Bloom DC

Overview

Art in Bloom DC is a yearly floral event held at Anderson House, a historic mansion on Washington, DC's Embassy Row. Completed in 1905, the house has served as the Society of the Cincinnati's headquarters since 1938 and is open to the public as a museum, filled with 17th-century Flemish tapestries, gilded ceilings, garden sculpture, and portraits. For the event, each floral designer chooses a work of art or architectural detail in the house and creates an arrangement that interprets it. The event began in 2021 (online that first year) and held its sixth edition in March 2026, with more than 30 floral arrangements on display.

Why It Matters

Art in Bloom DC shows that floral design is an art form, not just decoration. Visitors walk through the house and compare each arrangement with the painting, tapestry, or ceiling that inspired it, seeing how a designer turned color, texture, and mood into flowers. The event also offers live demonstrations where designers, including a former White House florist, share their techniques. It is part of a tradition of "Art in Bloom" events that began at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1976 and has spread to museums across the country.
