Angela Duckworth

Overview

Angela Duckworth is a psychologist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania who researches why some people stick with hard goals while others give up. After teaching math and science to middle schoolers, she noticed that her most successful students were not always the ones with the highest test scores. That observation led her to study what she calls “grit,” a combination of passion and long-term perseverance. In 2013, Duckworth received a MacArthur Fellowship, sometimes called a “genius grant,” for her research. That same year she co-founded Character Lab, a nonprofit that turned psychological science into tools for kids and teachers; it closed in 2024 after more than a decade, though its free resources remain online.

Why She Matters

Angela Duckworth's research challenged the idea that talent alone determines success, arguing that effort and persistence matter alongside talent. Later studies have found that grit predicts success more modestly than the early headlines suggested, but her work helped shift attention toward habits people can build. Her work is used in classrooms, sports teams, and workplaces worldwide to help people build habits that support long-term goals. As a psychologist still actively researching and speaking today, she shows students that psychology is not just a historical subject. It is a living, growing field that directly influences how people learn and grow.
