American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE)

Overview

The American Society of Professional Estimators is the oldest and largest professional organization for construction estimators in the United States. It was founded in 1956 by fewer than 20 estimators in the Los Angeles area who wanted to raise the standards and ethics of their profession, and it has since grown to thousands of members in chapters across the country. ASPE runs an Estimating Academy with courses for new and experienced estimators, publishes a technical journal called Estimating Today and a manual called Standard Estimating Practice, and holds local chapter meetings and a national summit where estimators share knowledge. Its Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) credential, earned through workshops, a technical paper, and written examinations, is the oldest accredited certification for estimators in the country, and its Associate Estimating Professional (AEP) credential gives early-career estimators a way to prove their skills.

Why It Matters

ASPE matters because it turned estimating from a skill people picked up on the job into a recognized profession with shared standards, training, and ethics. When an owner or contractor hires a Certified Professional Estimator, they know that person has been tested on both technical ability and honesty, which is essential in a job where a single number can commit a company to millions of dollars. For students, ASPE is also a practical doorway into the field: its chapters welcome young people who want to learn, its courses teach the fundamentals, and its members are working estimators who can explain what the career is really like. Joining a professional community early is one of the fastest ways to turn an interest in construction into a career.
