Did You Know?
Every website you visit is essentially a set of instructions written in code that your browser interprets and renders into the visual experience you see on screen. If you have ever right-clicked on a webpage and selected "View Page Source," you have seen the raw instructions that a web developer wrote.
How to Get Started
Getting started in web development begins with building something, anything, and learning from what does not work. The developers who go furthest in this field are rarely the ones who waited until they had the perfect resources or the right class before they started. They are the ones who got curious about how a website was made, tried to figure it out, broke something, fixed it, and kept going.
Explore the Basics
Visit a website you use often, right-click anywhere on the page, and select "View Page Source" to see the code that a developer wrote to create it. Spend a few minutes looking at the text and trying to spot words you recognize, like the name of the website or the text from a button or heading you can see on the page. You are looking at the same instructions that your browser reads every time you load that site.
Try It Out
Ask a parent or guardian to help you try a free beginner coding activity on a platform like Code.org, working through one of the guided projects that introduce basic concepts like sequences, loops, and events. Take note of the moments when something does not work and you have to figure out why, because that experience of finding and fixing an error is the most realistic preview of what web development actually feels like every day.
Join the Community
Ask a parent or guardian to take you to a maker faire, a science festival, or a community STEM event where you can talk to people who build websites and apps for a living and see demonstrations of what they have created. Seeing what real web developers make and hearing how they got started is one of the best ways to picture yourself doing the same thing someday.
