FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Social work begins with paying attention to the people and communities around you and asking why things are the way they are. Building habits of listening, curiosity about how systems work, and care for the people most affected by inequality are the earliest and most important steps. Every path into the profession starts with someone deciding that the world as it is does not have to be the world as it stays.

Explore the Basics

Ask a parent or caregiver to help you learn about one organization in your community that helps families in need, such as a food bank, a shelter, or a community center. Find out what they do, who they serve, and how people find out about them. Understanding what resources exist in a community is something social workers do every single day.

Try It Out

Make a "kindness map" of your neighborhood or school, drawing or writing about all the places and people where someone could go if they needed help. Think about who is missing from your map and what kinds of help are hard to find. Social workers spend their careers thinking about exactly these kinds of gaps.

Join the Community

Ask a parent or caregiver to help you write a letter to a local organization that helps people in your community, thanking them for their work and asking one question about what they do. Learning to reach out, ask questions, and connect with people doing meaningful work is a habit that serves social workers throughout their entire careers.
