Penetration Tester

Did You Know?

A Hollywood movie helped shape American cybersecurity policy. After President Reagan watched WarGames in 1983 and asked whether such a hack was possible, his top general reported the problem was worse than the president thought, and Reagan later signed a national security directive on computer security.

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Starting a career in penetration testing begins with curiosity about how things work and how they break, and with one rule that comes first: only test systems you own or have clear permission to test. Everything below follows that rule. Every penetration tester started as someone who liked puzzles, wanted to understand computers, and learned that the permission slip is what separates a professional from a criminal.

Explore the Basics

Play a game called Spot the Trick with a parent. Ask them to show you a few scam emails or text messages from their own junk folder, and together look for the clues: a strange sender address, spelling mistakes, a link that does not match the company, or a message that says you must act right now. Tricking people with fake messages is one of the most common ways real attackers break in, and learning to see through it is the first security skill anyone learns.

Try It Out

Invent a secret code. Write the alphabet on a strip of paper, then shift every letter by three places so that A becomes D, B becomes E, and so on. Write a message in your code and challenge a family member to crack it without the key. Then have them make a code for you. Codes like this were used by real armies for thousands of years, and today's penetration testers still spend their days breaking codes, just much harder ones

Join the Community

Ask your public library or school about free coding clubs or Hour of Code events, where you can learn the basics of how computers follow instructions. With a parent, you can also try Scratch, a free tool from MIT for ages 8 to 16, to build your first programs. Understanding how software is built is the foundation for understanding how it can be broken.
