What It Is
The Global Game Jam is the largest game-creation event in the world. Every year during the last week of January, participants gather at hundreds of locations across dozens of countries, watch a keynote, receive a secret theme, and then have 48 hours to design and build a complete game around it. It is not a competition. Teams form on the spot, mixing experienced developers with first-timers, and every game made is shared with the world. Since it began in 2009, the jam has drawn more than 485,000 participants who have created more than 100,000 games. In January 2025 alone, more than 35,000 people at 803 sites in 97 countries built roughly 12,000 games around the theme "Bubble!" The organization, a nonprofit, also runs GGJ Next, a version of the jam designed for young people ages 10 to 18.
Why It Matters
The Global Game Jam shows what game design really is: not a solitary genius at a keyboard but a team of people with different skills solving a creative problem together under a deadline. For a beginner, it is the fastest way to learn how a game gets made, because there is no time for anything but making it. For an aspiring professional, a finished jam game is a portfolio piece and the people at the table are a future network. For young people, the jam is a reminder that you do not need permission, a company, or a degree to make a game. You need a weekend, a theme, and a few people willing to try.
