Who He Was

Sundar Pichai is a software engineer and the CEO of Google and its parent company, Alphabet. He oversees products used by billions of people every day, including Search, Gmail, YouTube, Chrome, and Android. Born in India in 1972, Pichai grew up in a small apartment without a car, a television, or a computer. His family got their first telephone when he was twelve, and he became fascinated by technology from the moment he encountered it. He earned an engineering degree in India, then won a scholarship to Stanford, where he studied materials science, before completing an MBA at Wharton. He joined Google in 2004 and rose through the company by leading the development of the Chrome browser, which became the most widely used browser in the world, before becoming CEO in 2015.

Why He Matters

Sundar Pichai's story is a powerful reminder that some of the world's most influential engineers did not grow up with easy access to technology. He encountered computers late, came from a family of modest means, and built his career through curiosity, hard work, and the ability to understand both the technical and human sides of the products he worked on. His path from a small apartment in Chennai to leading one of the most important technology companies on Earth shows that where you start has nothing to do with where you can go. For young people who do not see themselves reflected in the typical image of a software engineer, Pichai's career directly challenges that assumption.
