Pia Sundhage

Who She Was

Pia Sundhage is a Swedish former professional soccer player and coach best known for leading the United States women's national soccer team to Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. Before coaching, she had a long playing career with the Swedish national team, appearing in multiple World Cups over more than a decade. After retiring as a player, she moved into coaching, eventually taking over the U.S. women's national team in 2008 during a period of transition for the program. She later returned to coach the Swedish national team, then went on to lead Brazil's women's national team and, more recently, Switzerland's, becoming one of the most respected coaches in international soccer.

Why She Matters

Pia Sundhage is known for bringing warmth and personality into a high-pressure sport, famously picking up a guitar to sing to her players during team celebrations and using music to build team unity. Her leadership of the U.S. women's national team helped elevate one of the most successful programs in soccer history during a critical period. Sundhage's willingness to coach in multiple countries, adapting her approach to different cultures, players, and soccer federations, shows how coaching skills can transfer across borders and languages. For young people who love soccer and connecting with others, her career is proof that coaching can be both deeply strategic and deeply human.
