Who He Is
Michael Gervais is a psychologist who specializes in high performance, helping athletes and other high achievers build mental skills like focus, calm, and confidence. He earned a master’s degree focused on sport and exercise psychology and later a doctorate. His clients have included Olympic athletes and the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, whose head coach at the time, Pete Carroll, called him the best he had ever been around. Red Bull also brought him in to help skydiver Felix Baumgartner prepare for a record-setting 2012 jump from about 24 miles above Earth. Baumgartner was comfortable with extreme heights, but wearing the tight, pressurized suit the jump required made him anxious, and Gervais helped him work through that fear.
Why He Matters
Gervais shows how far the tools of sports psychology reach, from a football field to the stratosphere. His work with Baumgartner showed that even someone at ease with extreme danger can be held back by fear in an unexpected place, and that this kind of fear can be worked through. He treats focus and calm as skills that can be practiced, not traits a person either has or doesn’t. That idea sits at the center of what sports psychologists teach. It also means the same mental skills can help people far beyond the playing field.
