Mellody Hobson

Who She Is

Mellody Hobson is the co-CEO and president of Ariel Investments, one of the first and largest Black-owned investment management firms in the United States. Ariel manages billions of dollars on behalf of individual and institutional investors. Born in Chicago in 1969, she grew up in financially precarious circumstances and worked her way to Princeton University, where she studied politics. She joined Ariel as an intern and rose to become its leader. Hobson serves on the boards of major corporations, including JPMorgan Chase and Starbucks, and she is one of the most prominent voices in America on financial literacy, investment strategy, and diversity in business. She is also the chair of the board of directors of DreamWorks Animation.

Why She Matters

Mellody Hobson has spent her career making the case that financial literacy is not a luxury but a necessity, and that the investment world needs to reflect the full diversity of the people whose money it manages. Her path from a childhood without financial stability to leading one of the country's most respected investment firms shows that this career is accessible to anyone with curiosity, discipline, and drive. Hobson uses her platform to talk openly about money, race, and the importance of understanding how markets work, topics that affect every American family. For young people who have never seen themselves reflected in the finance industry, her story is a direct invitation to imagine themselves there.
