Lillie Elizabeth Drennan

Who She Was

Lillie Elizabeth Drennan was the first licensed female truck driver in Texas and one of the first women to own a trucking company in the United States. Born in Galveston, Texas, in 1897, Drennan lost most of her hearing to scarlet fever as a young adult. Despite this challenge, she and her husband founded Drennan Truck Line in 1928 during the Texas oil boom. After their divorce in 1929, she became the sole owner and successfully ran the company for nearly 24 years. Known for wearing a 10-gallon hat and sometimes carrying a revolver, Drennan maintained a perfect driving record and won numerous safety awards.

Why She Matters

Lillie Drennan had a lasting impact on the trucking industry by demonstrating that women could not only drive trucks but also own and operate successful trucking businesses. When the Railroad Commission hesitated to grant her a commercial license because of her hearing impairment, she fought back and won, earning national recognition for her determination. During World War II, the U.S. Army praised her efforts to recruit women truck drivers. Her story matters because she showed that persistence, skill, and hard work can overcome discrimination and physical challenges, inspiring generations of women to pursue careers in trucking.
