Who He Was
Leigh Steinberg is one of the most famous and influential sports agents in history, known for representing the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft a record eight times. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he was encouraged by his parents, a teacher, and a librarian, to combine ambition with public service. While in law school at UC Berkeley, Steinberg became friends with a college quarterback named Steve Bartkowski, who became his first client when he was drafted first overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 1975. Steinberg went on to represent legendary athletes like Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Ben Roethlisberger, and is credited as the inspiration for Tom Cruise’s character in the movie Jerry Maguire.
Why He Matters
Leigh Steinberg had a lasting impact on the sports agent profession by demonstrating that agents could be more than just contract negotiators. They could be mentors, advocates, and leaders in their communities. He encouraged his clients to give back through charitable work and to be positive role models. Steinberg also helped bring the sports agent career into popular culture through his involvement with Jerry Maguire, showing the world what this profession looks like. His work mattered because it raised the standard for how athletes are represented and showed that success in sports business can go hand in hand with making a positive difference.
