Indra Nooyi

Who She Is

Indra Nooyi was born in 1955 in India and built one of the most remarkable careers in modern business history, beginning with a foundation in management consulting that shaped everything that followed. She earned a master's degree from the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta before coming to the United States to study at Yale School of Management. Her early career included a pivotal stint as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group, where she learned to analyze complex business problems across industries before committing to any single one. She joined PepsiCo in 1994 and rose to become its CEO in 2006, a position she held for twelve years, during which she transformed the company's portfolio, expanded its global reach, and championed a vision of corporate responsibility she called "Performance with Purpose." She was consistently ranked among the most powerful women in business during her tenure and was named to Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world multiple times. Since leaving PepsiCo, she has joined the boards of Amazon and other major organizations and remains one of the most sought-after voices in global business

Why She Matters

Indra Nooyi's career is a demonstration of what a consulting foundation can build. The skills she developed, analyzing businesses from the outside, understanding how organizations work, where their strengths and vulnerabilities lie, and how to communicate complex recommendations clearly, became the bedrock of her leadership at one of the world's largest consumer goods companies. As one of the first women of color to lead a Fortune 50 company, she navigated a business environment not designed with her in mind, without sacrificing the values or strategic vision that defined her approach. Her story matters not just because of what she achieved but because of the path she took to get there, one that began with asking hard questions about other people's businesses and eventually led to transforming one of the most recognizable brands on earth.
