What It Is
In 1961, a McDonald's franchise owner named Fred Turner opened a training facility in the basement of a restaurant in Illinois, with a few employees and a single hamburger grill used for instruction. He called it Hamburger University, and what started as a modest effort to standardize how McDonald's trained its managers became one of the most recognized corporate training institutions in the world. Today, Hamburger University operates out of a 130,000 square foot facility at McDonald's global headquarters in Chicago and has graduated more than 275,000 students since its founding. Coursework covers restaurant operations, leadership, financial management, and supply chain logistics, and the university operates in multiple languages to serve McDonald's global workforce. It has been recognized by the American Council on Education, which has evaluated and recommended some of its courses for college credit, placing it in the same evaluative framework as traditional academic institutions.
Why It Matters
Hamburger University exists because McDonald's understood something that many organizations took much longer to figure out: that the quality of training is directly connected to the quality of the product, and that investing seriously in how people learn is not a cost but a competitive advantage. The company that built one of the most recognizable brands in the world did so in part by treating the development of its people as a core business function rather than an administrative afterthought. For students who wonder whether corporate training is serious work, Hamburger University is one of the clearest answers available, a company known for selling burgers built a training institution respected enough to earn college credit recommendations. The trainers and instructional designers who built and continue to run that program are doing work that is rigorous, consequential, and anything but ordinary.
