Beads of Courage

Overview

Beads of Courage is a program used in children's hospitals where a child receives a specific, differently colored bead for every procedure, treatment, or milestone they go through during a serious illness. A child treated for cancer might receive one bead for every chemotherapy session, a different bead for every overnight hospital stay, and a special bead for finishing treatment. Over months or years, some kids end up with strings of beads long enough to wrap around their whole body, each one a physical record of something hard they got through. Child life specialists often introduce the program to a family and help a child string their beads together.

Why It Matters

For a child facing a long illness, it can be nearly impossible to see how far they have come while they are still in the middle of it. Beads of Courage turns an invisible, ongoing struggle into something a child can literally hold in their hands and count. It gives kids language for their own bravery, letting them tell their story to others using something tangible instead of medical terms they may not fully understand. The program shows how child life specialists find creative ways to help children process an experience that would otherwise just feel like something happening to them.
