Barbara Corcoran

Who She Was

Barbara Corcoran is a real estate entrepreneur, television personality, and investor who built one of New York City's most successful real estate agencies from a $1,000 loan. Born in 1949 in Edgewater, New Jersey, Corcoran held 22 different jobs before she was 23 years old. In 1973, with just that $1,000 and an idea, she started a small real estate business in New York City. Over the next 25 years, she grew The Corcoran Group into a firm that sold $5 billion in real estate before she sold it in 2001 for $66 million. She is now widely recognized as one of the "Sharks" on the television show Shark Tank, where she invests in entrepreneurs and businesses.

Why She Matters

Barbara Corcoran's story shows what creativity and persistence can achieve in real estate, even when the odds are against you. She was told she would never be successful, struggled in school, and started her business with almost nothing. Her career demonstrates that real estate rewards people who combine hustle with genuine skill and who are willing to learn from failure. For young people, especially those who do not see themselves following a traditional path, Corcoran's journey is a reminder that this profession offers room for unconventional thinkers willing to work hard and take smart risks.
